Today I’m supposed to write about the kindness of strangers (this is for my 30 day writing challenge – feel free to join in if you like).
I’m not sure what it says about me that nothing comes to mind when I try to think of a meaningful experience of kindness from a stranger. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful or ignorant. I do believe that strangers are generally kind, and I’ve most definitely been a recipient of kindness from a stranger. Without question.
There have been some “it takes a village” moments, like where our neighbor went out of her way to make sure my daughter felt included with the other neighborhood kids. Or the time I was struggling to get my groceries put away in my car and another mom offered to take my cart for me.
I guess I was hoping to have some elaborate story of an act of kindness from a stranger that deeply impacted me in some life-changing way, but I don’t. I have thought a lot about this, and think it’s just because while small acts of kindness may not stay with you for a long time, they can really go a long way to impact your day, by making it a little brighter. To help you feel appreciated or supported or laugh. And being the mom of two little ones, I am a believer that a good mood can really go a long way.
I think the point is to just love each other with no strings attached.
Lately, we’ve been struggling with empathy with our “threenager”. I want to start actively focusing on showing kindness, so I want to start doing random acts of kindness (see this site for inspiration)
Here are some ideas I like:
- Wheel out your neighbor’s trash bin when they forget trash day
- Send an encouraging email
- Send a care package
- Thank someone every week
- Text someone good morning or good night
- Donate used towels or blankets to an animal shelter
- Leave a generous tip
- Bake someone a cake
- Leave a positive review online
- Leave a surprise in your mailbox for your mail carrier
Do you have any good stories of kindness from strangers? Have you ever tried to show random acts of kindness?
This is Day 7 of my 30 Day Writing Challenge.
